6 Days Machame Route
Overview
The 6-Day Machame Route is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain at 5,895 meters (19,341 ft). Popularly known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame offers breathtaking landscapes, excellent acclimatization opportunities, and a higher summit success rate than the Marangu Route.
The trail passes through five distinct ecological zones, from lush rainforest and giant heather moorland to alpine desert and the snow-capped summit of Uhuru Peak. The route follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle, helping trekkers adapt to the altitude while enjoying spectacular views of Kibo, Mawenzi, Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, and the famous Barranco Wall.
This itinerary is ideal for adventurous hikers seeking a challenging yet achievable climb with unforgettable scenery and a greater chance of reaching the Roof of Africa.
Tour Plan
Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (3,000m)
Destination
Machame Gate → Machame Camp
Activities
After breakfast, depart from Arusha or Moshi and drive to Machame Gate for registration and a briefing by your mountain guide. Begin your trek through the dense rainforest, where the trail gradually climbs beneath towering trees draped with moss.
The forest is alive with birds, butterflies, and playful colobus monkeys, making the first day both exciting and relaxing. Arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon, where your crew will have your tents ready and a warm dinner prepared.
