Tarangire National Park is a national park in Tanzania’s Manyara region. The Name of the park originates from the Tarangire river that crosses the park. The Tarangire river is the primary source of fresh water for wild animals in the Tarangire ecosystem during the annual dry season. The Tarangire ecosystem is also defined by the long distance migration of wildebeest and Zebras. During the dry season, many animals concentrate in Tarangire National Park from the surrounding wet season dispersal and calving areas. It covers an area of 2,850 square kilometers and the land scape is composed of granitic ridges, river valley and the swamps. The vegetation is a mix of Acacia woodland and the seasonally flooded grassland.
The park is famous for its high density of elephants and baobab trees. The visitors to the park in the June to November dry season can expect to see large herds of many zebras, wildebeest, cape buffaloes, waterbuck, dik dik,impala, eland, grant’s gazelle, vervet monkeys, banded mongoose, olive baboon, lion, leopards, cheetah, caracal, honey badger, and African wild dog. The park is home to over 550 bird species, the park is a haven for bird enthusiasts. The park is also very famous for termite mounds that dot the land scape.
Tarangire National Park can be reached via paved road south from Arusha in under two hours. Lake Manyara National Park is a 170km drive from Tarangire.
Game drives
The game drives can be carried out during day and night and you get a chance to view many animal species including; zebras, wildebeest, cape buffaloes, waterbuck, dik dik,impala, eland, grant’s gazelle, vervet monkeys, banded mongoose, olive baboon, lion, leopards, cheetah, caracal, honey badger, and African wild dog and many more.
Bird watching
E Get to enjoy a large batch of colourful and very exclusive bird species. There are over 500 different bird species that are found in swamps that are spread all over Tarangire. Some of these bird species include; yellow necked spurfow, hornbills, guinea fowl, step eagles, brown parrots, the gigantic lappet faced vulture and the white bellied go away bird.
Sightseeing trips
As a dominant feature with in the park, Tarangire River stands out. Even when its very dry, the park has thick vegetation with acacia shrubs and mixed woodland. The huge baobarb trees that are scattered around in huge numbers that make the safari more memorable.
Walking safaris
These offer you a more learning experience about the smaller animals with in the bush land a better way of spotting the animals at close range without disturbing them. Get to experience a better different world by taking a trip to a Masaai or Barabaig village with Kolo on Dodoma road.
